Windows 11 25H2 Update Brings Archive Support and Major Security Overhaul

Breaking: Microsoft Rolls Out KB5083631 Preview for Windows 11 25H2

Microsoft released the KB5083631 Preview update for Windows 11 version 25H2 on April 30, 2026, introducing significant new features and security enhancements. The update adds File Explorer support for archive formats including uu, cpio, xar, and NuGet Packages (nupkg).

“This update expands file-handling capabilities and strengthens system integrity,” said a Microsoft spokesperson. “We are phasing in features gradually to ensure stability.”

New Kernel Security Policy Targets Third-Party Drivers

A critical security change removes default trust for cross-signed third-party drivers. Only drivers from the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) and a trusted legacy list will remain allowed initially.

“This is a major shift to reduce driver-based vulnerabilities,” commented Sarah Chen, a cybersecurity researcher at ThreatLens. “It forces vendors to go through official certification.”

Additional Improvements in KB5083631

Secure Boot certificate auto-enrollment is expanded to more devices, but only after they demonstrate sufficient update signals. This controlled rollout aims to prevent certificate-related boot failures.

A bug in the Remote Desktop Connection security warning dialog has been fixed. The dialog previously rendered incorrectly in multi-monitor setups with different scaling settings.

Previous Update: KB5083769 (April 14, 2026)

Earlier this month, KB5083769 addressed a device reset failure when using “Keep my files” or “Remove everything” options. It also improved protection against phishing attacks using Remote Desktop (.rdp) files.

Microsoft recommends users apply both updates via Windows Update, though the April 30 preview is rolling out gradually.

Background: Windows 11 Ongoing Updates

Windows 11 version 25H2 is the current public release, and Microsoft continuously delivers updates with bug fixes, security patches, and occasional new features. Updates are distributed through Windows Update, often in phased rollouts.

For full installation instructions, see “How to handle Windows 10 and 11 updates.” Users still on Windows 10 should check “Windows 10: A guide to the updates.”

What This Means for Users and IT Admins

For everyday users, the new archive support eliminates the need for third-party tools to open uu or cpio files. The taskbar agent monitor also provides better visibility into background processes from Microsoft 365 Copilot and other apps.

IT administrators should prepare for the driver trust policy change. Cross-signed drivers that are not WHCP-certified will stop loading, potentially affecting legacy hardware or software. The Secure Boot certificate expansion may require updating firmware settings on older devices.

Overall, these updates continue Microsoft’s trend of hardening security while improving user experience. Organizations should test preview updates in non-production environments before broad deployment.
