Breaking: Retro Livery Hits the Track

Apple and Porsche have debuted a bold, 1980s-inspired race car livery at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, scheduled to run on May 3. The design, a joint project between the two brands, features neon-accented graphics and retro typography that harken back to Porsche’s golden era of endurance racing.

“This livery pays homage to the iconic sponsorship partnerships of the 1980s while showcasing Apple’s modern design language,” said Markus Duesmann, Porsche Motorsport Vice President, in a statement. “It’s a celebration of innovation and heritage.”

Same Weekend as Miami Grand Prix

The debut coincides with the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, which airs on Apple TV this Sunday. Apple has been deepening its motorsport presence through streaming deals and now direct branding on race cars.

Porsche’s test driver, Lars Kern, will pilot the liveried car during demonstration laps at Laguna Seca. “The car feels alive with these colors. It’s a tribute to the fans who remember the Rothmans and Martini eras,” Kern added.

Background: A Growing Partnership

Apple and Porsche have collaborated for years, notably with Apple Music integration in Porsche vehicles and CarPlay interfaces. The livery project marks the first joint visual identity on a race car.

Porsche has a history of special liveries for milestone anniversaries, such as the 911’s 50th birthday. This design celebrates both Porsche’s motorsport legacy and Apple’s influence on automotive culture.

What This Means

The livery signals a strategic blurring of tech and automotive branding. Apple leverages Porsche’s racing credibility to reach enthusiasts, while Porsche gains a younger, tech-savvy audience.

This trend could lead to more cross-industry liveries in motorsport, where brand partnerships go beyond logos to co-created designs. Analysts say it reflects how heritage brands use nostalgia to stay relevant.

For fans, it’s a visual treat that bridges eras. The design will be on display only at Laguna Seca, but Porsche may produce limited-edition merchandise featuring the livery.
